What is the ACNC
The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is the independent national regulator of charities. The ACNC has been set up to achieve the following objects:
- maintain, protect and enhance public trust and confidence in the sector through increased accountability and transparency
- support and sustain a robust, vibrant, independent and innovative not-for-profit sector
- promote the reduction of unnecessary regulatory obligations on the sector.
What the ACNC does
To achieve the objects, the ACNC:
- registers organisations as charities
- helps charities understand and meet their obligations through information, guidance, advice and other support
- maintains a free and searchable public register so that anyone can look up information about registered charities
- is working with state and territory governments (as well as individual federal, state and territory government agencies) to develop a 'report-once, use-often' reporting framework for charities.
The ACNC is established under section 105-5 of the ACNC Act. Our objects and functions are in section 105-15 of this Act.
ACNC leaders
ACNC is led by Commissioner Susan Pascoe AM, Assistant Commissioners David Locke and Murray Baird, and a strong leadership team. The ACNC Commissioner's position is established by section 110-5 of the ACNC Act. Find out more about our leaders.
ACNC relationship with other government agencies
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) remains responsible for deciding eligibility for charity tax concessions and other Commonwealth exemptions and benefits.
There are also many other government agencies that regulate charities and other not-for-profits. For example, government agencies may provide grants and other funding. They may also regulate particular services provided by charities, such as aged care or education. Find out about the ACNC's relationship with some key Commonwealth regulators.
Adele Johns, Executive Officer of Community Compass Inc, presents research at Third Sector Conference in Hobart
Adele Johns, Executive Officer of Community Compass, presented her research, Engaging the Board of non profits in financial management, for effective organisational decision making in managing funds and community outcomes, at the 2012 biennial ANZTSR conference held 21-23 November. The conference, which addresses issues related to the Third Sector (the name given to nonprofit and nongovernment organisation working for the benefit of the community), had as its theme: Sustainability and the Third Sector.
A highlight of the conference was a reception hosted by the Honourable Peter Underwood the Governor of Tasmania at Government House in appreciation for the work and research being done across Australia and New Zealand by the conference delegates in the Third Sector and its prominent importance in such times of change for the sector.
Adele Johns states: It was exciting to be a part of this great conference and to be a part of a movement which not only is gaining in momentum but support and appreciation by the government. It certainly is a bright future for the Third Sector.
Adele Johns is completing her PhD at University of South Australia and also presented her research in May 2012 at a International Not-for-Profit Conference in Sienna Italy. Adele Johns leads Community Compass, a nonprofit organisation working on the Central Coast and in Sydney supporting nonprofit organisations in financial management, developing a number of projects which address pertinent needs in the sector and more can be discovered at the website:

In this session Adele will give practical and clear suggestions about how nonprofit leadership can become more engaged with its reports which will result in a positive impact on the outcomes of your organisation’s service delivery. You will come away from this session engaged and enthusiastic about the story your financial reports are saying about your service. This is a not-to-be-missed session.
